PECHSTEIN, HERMANN MAX

* 31.12.1881 Zwickau, † 29.06.1955 Berlin

Hermann Max Pechstein was born in Zwickau on 31 December 1881, the son of a textile worker. After an apprenticeship as a decorative painter, he studied at the Dresden School of Applied Arts. In 1906 Pechstein, by then a talented artist, left the Academy of Fine Arts with the highest distinction as a star pupil of Otto Gussmann. Due to his acquaintance with Erich Heckel and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, he joined the first Expressionist artists' group Die Brücke in 1907. In 1910 he participated in the founding of the Neue Secession in Berlin, which aimed to establish Expressionism in Germany. A year later he married Charlotte Kaprolat, and they had a son. His visit to the South Seas was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War. Pechstein returned to Berlin and enlisted for military service. In 1918 he participated in the founding of the radical and revolutionary Novembergruppe, which was open to all contemporary styles. In 1923 he separated from his wife and married Marta Möller, and together they had a second son. In the same year, he became a professor at the Prussian Academy of Arts.

When the National Socialists seized power in 1933, Pechstein lost his job and was banned from painting. In 1937, 326 of his works were confiscated and condemned as degenerate art. After the end of the Second World War, he was appointed as a teacher at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin. The colour-intensive figure paintings, still lifes and landscapes are typical of Pechstein. During his stay as a young artist in Paris in 1907 he was soon influenced by the Fauvists and the works of Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Paul Gauguin. For him, his experience of nature and those who lived in nature as encountered on his numerous journeys, were an inexhaustible source of inspiration and an area for artistic experimentation. During his stays in the artists' colony of Nidden between 1909 and 1939, he developed a fondness for seascapes. Pechstein always preferred regions that had remained completely untouched by tourism. Many of his works were created on the Pomeranian coast, the Curonian Spit and in Liguria. He found a perfect harmony between man and nature, which is reflected in his works from 1917 onwards, on the South Sea island of Palau. Deserted and dramatic landscapes reflect his experiences with the National Socialists in his later works. Hermann Max Pechstein, German painter and graphic artist and one of the best-known exponents of Expressionism, died in West Berlin on 29 June 1955.
