FEDERLE, HELMUT

* 31.10.1944 SOLOTHURN

After dropping out of an apprenticeship as an aircraft mechanic, Federle studied at the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule Basel from 1964 to 1969. From 1967 to 1969 he travelled to Tunisia, Afghanistan, India, and Nepal. His first solo exhibition at the Galerie Riehentor in Basel followed in 1971. He travelled again to Tunis and to the USA, where he was introduced to the work of Mark Rothko and Agnes Martin. In 1976, he exhibited together with Martin Disler at the Kunstmuseum der Stadt Solothurn. In 1979, Federle exhibited large-format paintings with geometric forms at the Kunsthalle Basel under the direction of Jean-Christophe Ammann, but this was largely met with incomprehension. Federle lived in New York for a year, where he exhibited at C-Space with John Armleder, Olivier Mosset, and Christoph Gossweiler. From 1983 to 1984, Federle lived in Zurich and was offered a teaching position in Reykjavík. He then moved to Vienna, where he has lived ever since and is represented by Galerie Nächst St. Stephan. In 1997 Federle represented Switzerland at the XLVII Venice Biennale. From 1999 to 2007, he was Professor of Painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Since the late 1960s, Federle has devoted himself to large-scale, geometric works that shift between formalism, symbolism and abstract construction.
