BOUDIN, EUGÈNE LOUIS

Honfleur 1824–1898 Deauville

Eugène Boudin is regarded as one of the first French landscape painters to paint in the open air, directly from nature – en plein air. Boudin made use of the elements of the landscape to model his compositions, always paying particular attention to the lifelike rendering of the sky and water.
In his younger years, Boudin studied briefly in Paris, where he was inspired by the paintings of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796–1875). Soon, however, he was drawn back to the Atlantic coast, where he fully devoted himself to the subject of the sea – his lifelong passion.
His numerous beach scenes represent a direct interplay of carefully observed naturalism, brilliant light and fluid brushwork, which were to have a significant impact on his fellow artists, the Impressionists, in the late 19th century.
In his search for 'the simple beauties of nature', Eugène Boudin attempted to capture light and atmospheric phenomena in painting, using a balanced colour palette and a swift and sometimes impasto brushstroke. It is therefore not surprising that the work of this plein air painter was universally celebrated by contemporary critics for both the brilliance with which he captured light and the palpable delicacy of his compositions. Jean-Baptiste Corot (1795–1875) even praised him as the 'king of the sky'.
