HELBARD

Bavarian, end of the 17th century, Infantry.
Brass lion-head pommel with copper tongue, iron hilt, grip and screwed side plate with decorative nodi and connection to the guard plate frame, further connection, thumb guard. Two-part guard plate, sheet metal with punctiform piercings. Original brass wire wrapping. Single-edged blade, back with hollow cuts.

The lion, the heraldic animal of the Duchy and later Kingdom of Bavaria, can also be found as a decorative element on Bavarian hand weapons of the 16th-19th century, e.g. as pommels or on guard plates. Cf. Gerd Maier, Bayerische Blankwaffen Teil I, 1983.
