Grand Duchess Elizabeth Alexeievna of Russia (1779-1826) was married to Grand Duke Alexander of Russia who became Tsar of Russia in 1801 (1801-1824). Born Princess Louise of Baden, she was a daughter of Charles Louis, Hereditary Prince of Baden, and his wife, Landgravine Amalie of Hesse-Darmstadt. Princess Louise came to Russia in November 1792, when she was chosen by Empress Catherine II of Russia 1729-1796) as a bride for her eldest grandson, Grand Duke Alexander Pavlovich of Russia, the future Tsar Alexander. They were married in 1793.

There are three existing profile portraits by August Ritt of the future Empress as Grand Duchess, dating from 1793, 1794 and 1796 (cf. G.N. Komelova, Augustin Ritt - russkiy miniatiurist, St. Petersburg, 2004, nos. II 84, 112 and 228; p. 46-48, 136). An engraving from 1794 by J.C. Nabholz of one of these portraits after Augustin Ritt is conserved in the collection of the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, inscribed with a dedication to the Grand Duchess’s father "Dedié à Son A.S. Monseig: le Prince Heréd: Charles Louis de Bade-Dourlach” (Hermitage inv. no.: ЭРГ-13613).
