HORIZONTAL, PORTABLE SUN DIAL WITH CASE

Paris ca. 1710. Signed Butterfield à Paris (Michael Butterfield Paris, 1635–1724).
Engraved brass. Octagonal base plate with recessed compass and 4 hour scales. Hinged gnomon with hand designed as a bird, with the bird's beak indicating the angle of latitude. The back of the plate and the bottom of the plate feature latitudes of various cities.
7.5 × 6.7 × 4 cm.
