Lot 1122* - A200 Decorative Arts - jeudi, 31. mars 2022, 10h00

PAIR OF FIGURES WITH A HORSE AND A GROOM

Meissen, ca. 1750. Models by Johann Joachim Kändler.
Both figures wearing a kaftan and a turban. Underglaze blue sword marks.
H 23.5 cm and 26 cm.

Small restorations.

These Meissen figural groups were also very popular with the marchands-merciers of the 18th century. In the "Livre-journal de Lazare Duvaux, marchand-bijoutier ordinaire du Roy 1748-1758", among the listed sales of June 1753, the following entry can be found: "1443 M. Gudin: un cheval de porcelaine de Saxe avec une figure à côsté. 168 l" (Lazare-Duvaux, Paris, Soc. des Bibliophiles François, 1873, p. 162).

The international popularity of these models is also confirmed in a painting by Aert Schouman (1710-1792), "Portret van Jan Bisschop, Pieter Bisschop en Olivier van Vlierden Hope," dated 1753. Depicted are three gentlemen from important Dutch families, examining various art objects on a table, including a porcelain model of a groom with a horse, quite obviously a Meissen model (see RKDimages, Netherlands Institute for Art History, No. IB00075837).

Comparative items: Dresden Porcelain Collection (Inv. No. PE 164); C. Albiker, Meissener Porzellantiere, 1935, Nos. 230, 231; Collection Sir Gawainie & Lady Baillie, Sotheby's London, 1 May 2013, Lot No. 176.
