Bernau im Schwarzwald 1839–1924 Karlsruhe

Hans Thoma prägte über Jahrzehnte hinweg die deutsche Kunstlandschaft mit seinen naturalistischen Landschaftsdarstellungen und Motiven aus der bäuerlichen Alltagswelt. Nachdem seine Bilder zunächst strikt abgelehnt wurden, gelang ihm 1890 mit seiner Münchner-Ausstellung der Durchbruch.


1839 in Bernau als Sohn eines Holzarbeiters geboren, stand er auf Seiten seiner Mutter in verwandtschaftlichem Verhältnis zum Porträtisten Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805–1873). Mit 20 Jahre besuchte Thoma die Kunstschule in Karlsruhe, an die er später auch als Professor zurückkehren sollte. Studienaufenthalte in der Schweiz, Frankreich, Deutschland und Italien sollten seinen Stil nachhaltig beeinflussen. Im Besonderen die Arbeiten seines französischen Künstlerkollegen Gustave Courbet (1819–1877) wirkten mit Nachdruck auf Thomas Oeuvre.

Die Werke Thomas, die einer kontrastreichen Farbenpracht und mit einem differenzierten Duktus für Flora, Gebirgslandschaft und Bauernarchitektur auf den Betrachter wirken, stellten für den deutschen Kunsthistoriker Henry Thode (1857–1920) eine Verkörperung nationaler Identität dar.
