Der deutsch-amerikanische Maler, Kunsttheoretiker und -pädagoge Josef Albers wird am 19. März 1888 in Bottrop in Nordrhein-Westfalen geboren. Nach einer akademischen Ausbildung in Berlin, Essen und München beginnt Albers 1920 ein Studium am Bauhaus in Weimar. Bereits 1923 wird er von Walter Gropius mit der Leitung der Werkstatt für Glasmalerei beauftragt und zwei Jahre später zum Jungmeister ernannt. Nach der Schliessung des Bauhauses durch die Nationalsozialisten im Jahr 1933 emigriert er mit seiner Frau in die USA, wo er bis 1949 Kunst am Black Mountain Institut in North Carolina unterrichtet. Zu seinen Schülern zählen Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell und Robert Rauschenberg. Ab 1936 erhält Albers zahlreiche Gastprofessuren weltweit. 1955 nimmt er an der documenta I und 1968 an der documenta IV in Kassel teil. Das Experimentieren mit Farben nimmt in seinem Frühwerk eine untergeordnete Rolle ein. Erst mit der Übersiedlung in die Vereinigten Staaten widmet er sich vermehrt diesem Thema, sowie den geometrischen Formen und ihrer Auflösung. Albers berühmte Farbtheorie "The Interaction of Color", eines seiner Hauptwerke, das 1963 erscheint, zählt zu den bedeutendsten Künstlerbüchern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sein künstlerisches Schaffen, das mit der Serie „Hommage to the Square“ den Höhepunkt erreicht, wird mit zahlreichen Auszeichnungen geehrt. Die Ehrendoktorwürde wird ihm insgesamt 14-mal verliehen. Als Lehrer wie auch als Künstler ist Albers wegweisend für die amerikanische Malerei. Die unterschiedlichen Stilrichtungen wie Op-Art, Neue Abstraktion und Colour Field Painting beeinflusst Albers merklich.

Josef Albers stirbt 1976 in New Haven.
